Brief Description
Jocelynang Baliwag was one of the music that gave Baliwag prominence in the field of music and performing arts. It was popularly referred to as the “Kundiman ng Himagsikan” because of the previous studies made by Antonio Molina. However, recent researches led to new interpretation and dating of the music. Based on these, Jocelynang Baliwag is now believed to be composed during the American Period (instead of the Spanish Period).
The music/song is being performed frequently in important gatherings and cultural activities and has been a staple part of programs in Baliwag.
Sigficance
The music sheet for Jocelynang Baliwag was first published in circa 1905 together with other compositions by Baliwagneyo musicians. The music of Jocelynang Baliwag was composed by Lucino Buenaventura, one of the masters in the music tradition in Baliwag in the late 19th century. He was the cornetinsolosita of the Banda del Regimiento Peninsular de Artillera during the Spanish Period. He established the Banda Baliwag which is now called as Banda Buenaventura.
Meanwhile, the lyrics of the song Jocelynang Baliwag is believed to be inspired by Pepita. Pepita is Josefa Tiongson y Lara, a maiden from Baliwag who captured the heart of Isabelodelos Reyes who wrote the lyrics dedicated for Pepita.
