Brief Description

The Rizal Monument in front of St. Augustine Church in Plaza Naning was sculpted by Roman V. Carreon, a local artist hailed as the master in sculpture in the town of Baliwag. The monument, unlike the usual monuments in other places, presents Rizal in a tableau with other figures filled with symbolism.

Significance

Carlo Nicoli of Italy won in the design competition held from 1905 to 1907 for the Rizal Monument to be installed in Luneta. However, his winning piece did not materialize and instead the second place was fabricated and is now installed in Luneta. In 1925, Roman V. Carreon was commissioned by Municipal President Pedro Mateo to re-design the existing Rizal Monument of the town. Nicoli’s design could have been Carreon’s inspiration for his Rizal Monument as there are many similar elements between the two. One interesting element was the woman kissing Rizal which can be the personification of the Inang Bayan instead of an angel in Nicoli’s design. Other figures of women in the lower layer and twokatipuneros positioned adjacent the main monument may represent the Filipinos fighting for independence during the revolution. The monument was inaugurated on December 30, 1925 by Senate President Manuel Quezon.
