Brief Description
The Angat River (also known as Rio de Quingua) passes through portions of Baliwag. It is also the body of water that separates Baliwag from Bustos.
Significance
The Angat River is historically significant for the town of Baliwag. Angat River was pivotal in the separation of Baliwag and Bustos because of the tragic incident that happened in the river. In the 1860s, people were crossing the river in a boat to attend the baptismal ceremony of their children in the church of Baliwag. A storm sank the vessel and most of them got drowned. This facilitated the construction of an independent parish in Bustos which then commenced its separation from Baliwag.
The Angat River may have its fair share on the etymologyof the town’s name. First, some historians say that the term Baliwag came from the word maliliwag because the churchgoers from the town usually come late to the Masses as they usually ride the boat and traverse the river to get to the church in Quingua. Second, Baliwag is also a vernacular or Tagalog word that means malalim or deep. This may then refer to the river as well as the Angat River is quite calm and deep.
